Fish are a food source with a significant amount of waste. When making sashimi from a single fish, approximately 60% of the fish's weight is discarded. By transforming fish skins, which would otherwise be thrown away, into fish leather, we can reduce waste. Many people working in the primary industry of fisheries have relatively low wages, so we purchase the skins to contribute to improving their income.

Ocean Leather is based in Kochi Prefecture, where we conduct integrated production from fish leather processing to leather product manufacturing. Additionally, our adjacent seafood processing department allows us to connect swiftly and efficiently with the production process.

In developing countries, inexpensive leather products are often tanned using chromium as a primary agent, and the untreated wastewater is sometimes discharged into rivers, leading to severe health issues and environmental damage for nearby communities. At Ocean Leather, we use vegetable tanning, which is a more environmentally friendly method compared to chrome tanning and other heavy metal-based tanning processes.

Scraps from the production of our products are used as efficiently as possible. We minimize waste by using them in smaller items and through workshops.

Additionally, scales, which are discarded along with the leather, are thoroughly cleaned, dyed, and utilized as cushioning material for packaging leather products, as well as in other products.
